Our Patron

Chris Packham

We’re delighted to announce that Chris Packham has agreed to be Patron of Dogs for Autism. Chris is well known for his work as a Wildlife TV presenter and conservationist and for his successful campaign work in protecting animals and the environment. Chris has talked openly about his autism and the support his dogs have given him over the years.

Chris received his autism diagnosis in his forties and has recently talked about how this helped explain the feelings of isolation and depression he suffered as a young man. We are honoured that Chris has agreed to support our organisation and we are looking forward to working with him.

Operational Team

Our Operational Team, made up of staff and volunteers are all dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of autistic individuals and their families.

Hilary Armour

Chief Executive Officer

The Founder and Chief Executive of Dogs for Autism, Hilary Armour, is a qualified dog trainer, animal behaviourist and teacher. Throughout her teaching career Hilary has specialised in teaching autistic students with additional learning disabilities.

Hilary’s son was diagnosed with autism as a young child and this was the catalyst for her work training assistance dogs.

Recognising the benefits for an autistic young person of being partnered with a dog, but being unable to access an assistance dog through any of the existing charities, she used her dog trainer experience to ‘owner-train’ her son’s first dog.

Once out and about with their dog, she was frequently approached by other parents in need who were desperate to know where she had managed to find an autism assistance dog.

Becoming aware of the sheer number of isolated families whose lives could be changed with the support of a dog, Hilary decided to act.

Hilary’s vision is that Dogs for Autism will become for the autistic community what Guide dogs for the Blind is to the visually impaired.

As CEO, Hilary is the face of Dogs for Autism and is responsible for overseeing the charity and steering its growth. She supervises the development of the charity infrastructure and its financial management.

Despite her very busy role as CEO, Hilary is still very hands on in the work of the charity, training dogs from the charity headquarters and supporting families and staff.

Development Manager

Jan is a qualified primary school teacher, former veterinary practice manager and dog trainer, with a Diploma in Animal Assisted Therapy.

Over the years she has owned, bred and trained many dogs, enjoying heelwork to music, agility, carriage dog training and obedience work, and has competed with her dogs at Crufts.

Jan works very closely with Hilary planning, organising and supervising the provision of services within the charity. She is the safeguarding lead for DfA, and until very recently has been responsible for writing grant and trust applications.

Jan advises on breeding schemes, whelping and puppy husbandry and oversees the puppy training for our Alton hub.

She trained one of our Assistance Dogs, Luna, and enjoyed working with Luna’s autistic partner and her family.

Jan is particularly interested in the interaction between humans and dogs, and how this can benefit an autistic person, their family and the wider community, at the same time as fulfilling the dog’s need for human companionship and mental stimulation.

Jan’s role in Dogs for Autism combines her skills in dog handling with her background in management, education and young people, improving outcomes for both the people and the dogs she has the pleasure of connecting with.

Jo Scott

Consultant Behaviour and Training Advisor QTLS, RVN, Dip CABT, CABP, CCAB, TAQA

I started my career with horses following the passion I’ve had for them from a very young age. From there I had a sidestep to working with dogs at an RSPCA home where I was poached by the visiting vets to become their first qualified RVN. I stayed with Cedar Veterinary Group for 25 years, initially as head nurse and then from 1994-2008, as a full-time professional referral pet behaviour therapist and dog trainer.

I graduated with my COAPE Diploma in Companion Animal Behaviour in 1999 followed by other behaviour and training certificates including a City and Guilds in clinical small animal nutrition, a subject I have always been interested in.

Following five years of running a referral centre which included hydrotherapy, grooming as well as training and behaviour referrals I had a change of direction and followed a path that had been developing over a few years. I achieved my teaching qualifications whilst working full time as Course Manager in animal behaviour, animal care and veterinary nursing at Kingston Maurward College. I then went on to combine all my qualifications by returning to practice for a veterinary practice in Dorset where I was Principal of the South Coast Hydrotherapy School. I then moved to an exotic referral practice at Piddle Valley Vets as RVN, Animal Behaviour Therapist and trainer, and was in charge of nurse training.

I have now left practice and work as an online tutor and marker for international animal behaviour and training education providers. I also write books and articles on companion animal behaviour and pet first aid, on which I also run courses. I also volunteer when I can for Riding for Disabled, a cause that is very close to my heart.

My free time is spent with family and growing menagerie of dogs, cats, ferrets, ponies and my beloved horse, Zana. I take every opportunity to get outdoors and walk or ride, whatever the weather, just spending time with animals has its own rewards.

Allie Stubbs

Training Development Manager

I have spent over 25 years working as a trainer with numerous assistance dog organisations, from essential first stage puppy training to the more specific tasks needed in training assistance dogs. I thrive on developing the partnerships that enable independence and creates a balanced lifestyle for both the partners and the dogs.

I also enjoy working with volunteers and encouraging them to work through both the highs and lows of dog training and witnessing the amazing outcomes and rewards that it creates.

When I am not busy training dogs, I spend time on our smallholding with our working collies and sheep. I also enjoy time at the beach, walking and riding my horse in the countryside.

All in all, I’m an outdoor kind of person.

Santa Aumeistere

Senior Trainer

My journey into assistance dog training started when I realized that working in television was too stressful! So, I decided to follow my dream and volunteered with Latvian service dog association, Teodors, as a trainee guide dog trainer. After successfully graduating my first dog and helping many others I knew I wanted to pursue a career in assistance dog training.

I believe that the UK has the best assistance dog charities so I came back to the UK, working in dog day care, helping to grow the business and fully immersing myself into dog behaviour studies and training.

Before I left Canine Partners, I was running multiple classes, one to one sessions and still caring for dogs and the team in daycare. I am now following my passion as a Senior Assistance Dog Trainer here at Dogs for Autism.
